The Power of Saying Yes: Daniel Smrokowski’s Journey to Team Coca-Cola

For Special Olympics Illinois Athlete Leader Daniel Smrokowski, saying “yes” to new opportunities has been a guiding principle that’s opened doors to extraordinary experiences on the world stage. His journey to joining Team Coca-Cola began in 2019 when he embraced his role as a Sargent Shriver Global Messenger (SSGM) for Special Olympics. During that year’s World Games, Daniel emceed a Coca-Cola luncheon for SSGMs, where his message about the “real magic” of inclusion resonated deeply with Coca-Cola’s chairman and Special Olympics’ Tim Shriver. From that moment, Daniel’s voice became a bridge between two organizations passionate about celebrating everyday greatness.

Daniel’s relationship with Coca-Cola grew from there. Throughout his term as an SSGM, he represented Special Olympics at events like Coca-Cola’s Global Community Summit in Atlanta and a Unified Leadership training in Orlando, highlighting the spirit of inclusion. His speech at the Coca-Cola luncheon during the Berlin World Games left a lasting impression, and in 2023, Coca-Cola invited him to join Team Coca-Cola as an ambassador for their “Celebrate Everyday Greatness” campaign. This opportunity made Daniel only the second Special Olympics athlete ever to be part of this prestigious team.

Behind the Scenes of Team Coca-Cola

Daniel joined Team Coca-Cola in October 2023, kicking off with an exciting photoshoot in Barcelona. Traveling in first class, he was joined by his sister for the trip. The shoot included a professional trailer, hair and makeup, and multiple locations that highlighted his connection to Coca-Cola products, including Smartwater. This was followed by a global announcement in April 2024.   “Meeting Olympic and Paralympic athletes was incredible,” Daniel remarked. “But what truly stood out was how Coca-Cola treated me with the same level of respect and honor as every athlete on the team. It reinforced just how powerful inclusion can be,” he continued.

His social media campaign included a series of posts capturing the journey, such as:

Beyond social media, Daniel also hosted a two-episode podcast event on Special Chronicles, sharing behind-the-scenes stories of the photoshoot, the athlete interactions, and what it means to be included on such a significant stage. This podcast provides an in-depth look for anyone interested in the full experience of being on Team Coca-Cola and celebrating everyday greatness in new and exciting ways.

A Call to Future Leaders to Embrace the Unexpected

For Daniel, this experience has been “the biggest opportunity I’ve had.” Being included on the same stage as world-renowned athletes was more than just a career milestone—it was a testament to the power of saying “yes.” As he looks ahead, Daniel hopes his story will inspire future Special Olympics athletes to embrace opportunities fearlessly.

To those attending the Leadership Academy in Chicago on November 9-10, Daniel’s journey serves as a reminder: saying yes can take you to places you never imagined. By stepping forward, you open doors not only for yourself but for countless others who may be inspired to follow. So, the next time an opportunity comes your way, take it! You never know where it might lead.
